Herb Kohl

Educational Foundation, Inc

Nomination & Selection Process

Nominations will only be accepted using the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation online nomination form on this website.  Nominations for the 2023 Award cycle has closed.  All nominations received will be held for the 2024 Award cycle which opens in August 2023.
To be eligible to compete for a 2024 Herb Kohl Fellowship, teachers must be nominated by students, parents, other teachers, community members, or administrators.  Because the program's purpose is to recognize the contributions of Wisconsin classroom teachers, staff members whose assignments are administrative or supervisory are not eligible. All PreK-12 classroom teachers who plan to continue teaching in their current capacity for a minimum of 50% full time equivalency during the 2024-2025 school year are eligible.  Pre-school teachers must teach in a Pre-K program that is affiliated with an elementary school. Previous fellowship recipients are ineligible, however previous fellowship nominees who did not receive a fellowship may re-apply if nominated.

Once nominated, a teacher will receive email notification of his or her nomination. The deadline for candidates who have been nominated for the 2023 Fellowship to submit a completed application has passed.

Regional committees, which will include parents, teachers, administrators, civic and business leaders, and local newspaper people, will review applications.  Regional committees will forward finalist applicants to a statewide selection committee by Monday, December 19, 2022.

Representatives of the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation, Cooperative Education Service Agencies, Wisconsin Newspaper Association, Wisconsin private schools, and state education-related associations serve on the State Selection Committee. The committee will choose 2023 fellowship recipients by February 1, 2023, and applicants will be notified of their selection no later than March 2023.
