On April 8, 2017 Herb Kohl made a surprise announcement that he is doubling the dollar amounts awarded to all 2017 scholarship, fellowship, and leadership award recipients. The new dollar amount for Excellence and Initiative scholars is $10,000 per recipient, the dollar amount for teacher Fellowship recipients is now $6,000 per teacher and $6,000 for each Fellowship recipient's school, and the dollar amount for each principal Leadership recipient is $6,000 per principal and $6,000 for each Leadership recipient's school. The surprise announcement was made at the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation award luncheon in Greendale, Wisconsin.

Chris Gleason, a band director and instrumental music teacher at Patrick Marsh Middle School in the Sun Prairie School District, is one of four finalists for the National Teacher of the Year program. Chris is a 2016 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Fellowship recipient. Selection of the National Teacher of the Year will take place in the spring.
On October 3, 2016 Herb Kohl Philanthropies completed funding the classroom requests of Wisconsin teachers posted on the education crowdfunding site DonorsChoose.org. As a result of Herb Kohl's $500,000 donation 1,203 projects were funded helping 81,486 students, serving 449 schools and supporting 897 teachers. In a surprise ceremony at her school on September 21, 2016, Jana Horn, a middle school science teacher at Hales Corners Lutheran School, was named the first-ever Wisconsin Private School Teacher of the Year. During surprise visits to their schools on September 8-9, 2016, four Wisconsin public school teachers were notified of their selection as 2016-17 Teachers of the Year. They are Sarah Breckley, Reedsburg School District; Pamela Gresser, D.C. Everest School District; Chris Gleason, Sun Prairie Area School District; and Barbara VanDoorn, Lake Holcombe School District. Nominations of outstanding principals or school administrators for the 2017 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Leadership Award are now complete. Nominations were accepted through September 23, 2016. Principals who are selected for this competitive award will receive $3000 and their schools will receive a matching $3000 grant.
